Corvid's Corner - December 2023

Mario Party Superstars

Welcome to Corvid’s Corner! This is a place for me to geek out about whatever video game I’m playing or music I’m listening to, and write about it in a longer form than a staff pick. If you try this game on for size, please let me know! I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I’ve had my Nintendo Switch for quite a few years, and I’ve played many games of differing genres. My favorites tend to be cozy games or competitive games, like Animal Crossing or Mario Kart 8, and today I will be talking about my favorite competitive game: Mario Party Superstars. One of the best things about Nintendo is that when they do a game right, they will release it for another newer console, and Mario Party has been no exception. The first Mario Party game came out in 1998 for the Nintendo 64. I’ve not played that one, but I have played some of the Mario Parties for the GameCube and the DS, and I have great memories playing those while growing up! MP Superstars has all the mainline characters, and has Rosalina, Donkey Kong, and Birdo too. My favorite character to play is Waluigi! He was introduced to the Mario Party roster in the third game. Who is your main character?

Mario Party Superstars is a Nintendo Switch game released in 2021 and is a compilation of 100 of the best minigames and five game boards from different games! It features online play capabilities so you can play with friends and strangers, which is a big plus for me, because my sibling and I live in different homes.

What I like most about Mario Party Superstars is that it has some of the best minigames from different platforms over the years. (I only wish it had Mowtown, the grass cutting minigame from MP 6 for the GameCube.) A couple favorite minigames of mine are:

  • Facelift, a game where you have to manipulate a character’s face to match the silly example.

  • Catch You Letter, where you catch letters and hand them back to the Postmaster Shyguy.

  • Easta Pizza, a 2 vs. 2 minigame where you work with a buddy to eat pizza faster than your opponents. (Crust takes longer to eat!)

If you have a Nintendo Switch system at home, come to the library and check out our copy. For a fun multiplayer game with a dash of nostalgia that is suitable for all ages, giveMario Party Superstarsa try!
