Corvid's Corner February 2024 - Katamari Damacy Reroll 🎮

Katamari Damacy Reroll:

Welcome to Corvid’s Corner! This is a place for me to geek out about whatever video game I’m playing or music I’m listening to, and write about it in a longer form than a staff pick. If you try this game on for size, please let me know! I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I got Katamari Damacy Reroll for Christmas, and it has been a lot of fun! I play on my Nintendo Switch, but this game series has been around since the Playstation 2 days. (Katamari Damacy Reroll is available on many platforms. Find it on Steam, Xbox One, Playstation 4 and the Nintendo Switch.) The story is silly, the gameplay is pretty simple, and those two features are a prime combo for a good game. In Katamari Damacy Reroll, you play as The Dashing Prince, son of The King of All Cosmos, and you are tasked with recreating stars from, well, junk. The King accidentally destroyed a large number of stars, and you have to help him put them back. You must combine many items of various sizes into a ball called a katamari ball, and they become stars once they reach a certain size. In early levels, your katamari is about your size, allowing you to pick up things like ants and thumb tacks, but as you progress through the levels, the ball grows, and you can pick up larger things like bears or humans. You are judged by the size of your ball and the time it took to get to that circumference. Once you’ve successfully created a ball, The King of All Cosmos sends it to the sky to replace the star he destroyed.

In all honesty, I have not gotten super deep into this game. I’ve played a few levels, but as far as the story goes, it seems pretty straightforward: The King of All Cosmos blew up some of the stars in the sky, he made it our job to roll up a ball of junk to replace the star, and you do the thing. That’s really it. Katamari Damacy Reroll is the newest in the series, and the graphics are improved from past games. The Pint-Sized Prince has a silly, cute design, and the King of All Cosmos looks…epic. I’m not sure how to describe him. You’re going to have to play for yourself to see him in all his glory. There are some cutscenes where the humans on Earth notice the stars have disappeared from the sky, and these animations are really funny, with blocky people and cheesy voice acting. The music and sound effects are fun. As far as gameplay goes, there is one manuever that is really difficult to do on the Switch, but is easier on the Playstation. I think it has to do with the style of the different controllers. It hasn’t impeded my ability to play the levels I have, but I have a feeling it may become a problem later, right? It wouldn’t be a function if players didn’t need it. One of the levels has you picking up chicken eggs, and they hatch on your katamari ball as you play, leaving you with a flapping, chirping ball. It’s hilarious.

For a goofy, lighthearted game that doesn’t require a lot of brain power, try picking upKatamari Damacy Reroll!
